Instead of getting defensive, we should view this as an opportunity to improve our educational system. Why can’t the U.S. educational system generate the highest test scores AND be the best at fostering leadership/innovation? These are not mutually exclusive skills.

Asian students who migrate to the US every year for higher studies play a big role in making most of the much talked about innovations happen in the first place. US’s competitive advantage is the draw of its Ivy-League Universities – if it weren’t for them, I guess these so-called robots would have been just as gladly ‘innovating’ in their home countries.

am a chinese american mom who immigrated here attending top american university after completing my BS. in top Beijing university. Now my children are born and raised in top public school in Los Angeles. I’m deeply concerned that with all the money myself, my husband, city, state, federal put into to educae 1 child in Los Angeles, California, she won’t get same quality of education as much as I obtained from a 2nd tier city in China 20 years ago. China, definitely spends way less money in educating the mass. Even though its true that a lot of them are memorization, focused on math, engineering. However, I do wonder isn’t that kind of skill set future job markets in developed countries are asking for.
All the jobs in the future will require more skilled workers. If it’s unskilled, how can we compete with countries that’s poor, abundant of unskilled labor who require much much lower cost-living standard? Outsourcing will become inevitable. Balancing outsourcing with national protectionism is necessary, but not going to last forever. Everything eventually comes down to economy. Simple as that – everybody wants to live a better life. While I worry about myself and my neighbors of losing jobs, or not getting a good job, I also wish the best for the kids in every poor village in china to be able to get out of slum, to go to cities, to get a bette job than their parents, and to leave poverty behind.
The kids in those poor villages in China know to get there, it’s through education.
Again, simple as that – study hard, work hard, they can have a better life.
I don’t know if every kid in Amercian understands it, because little by little, education has become an entitlement here. So it’s not about what we should learn in school, it’s about set the right motive and purpose for education, as for an individual, and for a country as whole.

In my interaction with southeastern Asia workers within my company, I am not surprised they outscore US students in anything. US students are currently among the laziest and weak willed world wide, but the asia business professional is still very lacking in attention to detail and ownership of their part of the big picture. They are barely worth the effort to guide them through processes and have no idea of how to “think through” a problem . Life doesnt always play by rules or follow strict doctrine and they simple have a tough time adjusting to that.

Ah, yes: superiority. Let’s see – Hitler’s Aryan minions were superior, seeds of a master race. The USSR represented the superiority of socialism (so did Li Na, ha!). Certainly North Korea tells itself no end of fantasies about the superior and divine existence it has as a result of the great Kims. And the Japanese were superior, at least to the dogs in the rest of Asia. Yes, superiority: it has such a glorious past of predicting exactly who will end up on top.
